winter solstice
the clock tower lost
in freezing fog

December night -
the glow of brake lights
on a wheelie-bin

wind-blown rain -
two boys in the play park
after dark

northbound train -
beyond the black clouds
light grey clouds

dank Monday -
worm holes
in a windfall apple

a poppy
almost bleached to white
November rain

the lights change
from green to amber -
falling leaves

autumn deepens -
my neighbour
practicing the drums

[With apologies to Basho]

a different route
but still the wind
follows me home

in the gutter
yesterday's rain
and a cut rose

where I saw
the roadkill squirrel -
sunset reds

too overcast
for stars tonight I wish
on the moon

autumn sunshine -
an old gift
gathers dust
